Compression testing is a very common testing method. It may be used to measure the compressibility of a material as well as the recovery of a material that has been compressed to a load and held over a time period. Compressive tests are used to determine the material behaviour under load. The maximum stress a material can sustain over a period of time under load (constant or progressive) is determined.
Compression testing is often done to a break or to a limit. When the test is performed to a break (rupture), a break detector is used. When the test is performed to a limit, either a load limit or deflection limit is used.
